You can and probably should fool around with XF86Config-4 while in X. It's only checked at X server startup - to make the changes stick, you just have to restart X - a reboot will accomplish this.
If you need a basic shell, ctrl-alt-F<1-6> should work for you.

What video card/monitor are you using?

Post the contents of /var/log/XFree86.0.log and your XF86Config-4?

No offense, Happy, but I've installed Debian 6 times in the last couple monts, and I've used the standard install (bunches of disks). the net install (1 disk), Morphix LiveCD hdinstall, and finally Knoppix LiveCD hdinstall. None of them disabled root login in X! My current net install has (like all the others) put root at the bottom of my KDE login screen. I really believe the guy has a problem with X, not kdmrc.

If it does not start kdm automatically or uses another check the alternatives:
Code:
HappyTux:/home/stephen# update-alternatives --display x-session-manager
x-session-manager - status is auto.
 link currently points to /usr/bin/kde3
/usr/bin/kde3 - priority 40
Current `best' version is /usr/bin/kde3.
Change the --display to --config if you need to change it.
Since all run levels sem to be the same, what should I do specifically in terms of the "rc" directories to make sure my run level 2 works so that login is top a shell and not into X? Is there a file to change or a file to delete and where?
