Tricky, or perhaps impossible. There are 2 distros I know of that you can do this with. SuSE does a Live Evaluation cd which allows you to run Linux this way. So does Knoppix. Have a look at www.distrowatch.com and see if either would suit your needs.

Another option: www.demolinux.org

One thing to note: running from CD is cool and everything, but it you're going to boot into X, everything is going to be SLOOOOOOOOOOW since you have to access the CD over and over again.

Yikes! I just realized you wanted to modify an existing install to go on CD? I'm afraid I can't help there. I might be able to stumble around some trying to get it to work, but I'd end up with an awful lot of coasters...

I'd say Knoppix, had a play with it and was well impressed. You can use the CD to do a full Debian install as well if you decide you want that but if not you can still access all your drives, save files etc. The harware detection and support seems really good as well. The things that took me 30 mins or so to set up in Debian were done during the boot process with knoppix!!!!

Knoppix pretty much is the bomb, work is done on it three times as much as demolinux, and although it takes some herculean leaps that demo doesn't, its worked out of the box on about 9 out of the 10 or so machines I've dropped it into.

Cheers,

Finegan
