Linux command

Hi,

Is there any way to find out what command is available on a (Redhat) linux box for a specific task ?

For example, suppose: I don't know which command to use for displaying installed package/software on a linux box. Now what to do, If I don't have an internet connectivity and I need to perform the action ? (If internet were there I could use google and search for help)

Is there anyway finding out appropriate command for specific task ?

This would be very helpful for me.

-Thanks in Advance.

Search the manpages. For instance suppose you want to know about any command related to copying.
$ apropos copy
or
$ man -k copy

Then pick one you think looks like something you want.
$ man cp
While you are reading the manpage type "/" then a word to search for it. Type "/" to find the next occurence of the word.

Thumbs up Thanks, It serves my purpose

Hi,

Thanks, Its very useful. First I tried with RedHat 6.2 but error coming up with a message like

"copy: nothing appropriate"

But next I tried same on Redhat 9: It showing me with a list of related commands .. so I can choose one.

----

Any Idea what to do with older version like 6.2 ? Or just I have to memorize ?

-Thanks,

You can try the command:

# rpm -qa
... to get a list of all the installed packages in your RedHat system.

Hope this helps
