Probably the most recognizable one right now is the LPI, Linux Professional Institute. There is also the Sair Linux Certs as well.
Also you can go with the RHCE, which is the RedHat Certified Engineer certification.
Right now I am working on my Solaris Certs, then maybe look into getting the Linux Certs from LPI.

For beginners, CompTIA does the Linux+ cert, which is a step below the LPI/SAIR certs. The RHCE is the most heavy-duty, and I've heard that the test is pretty tough.

I've tried to get Solaris certified twice but then the part two of the certification goes out of date! This was extremely frustrating.

(I passed the part One for 2.5.1 and 2.6) I thought it was easy.
Well easier than the AIX anyway, a long long time ago.

Now I am so, lets say, 'fed up' that I will not get Sun Certified now.

I have spoken to SysAdmins who have never bothered to get certified and they never will.

Mind you these guys have alot of credentials that get them decent UNIX positions, (oxford edu), or they prove their worth contracting. If they stay on the contract they must be doing okay.

I find that the certification path helps to cover comprhensively the subject. Having said that, You need a shed load of experience as well!

I've looked into the Linux certification for my own pleasure and it soon becomes apparent that this is by no means an easy certification. I just havent enough time myself as I have enough to do already. Perhaps one day, And I cant get away from Sun really.
