Does it go to the terminal because it can't go into X, or does it just go right to the terminal? If your screen flashes a few times and you can't get into X, try this as root ...
vim /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config [it's case sensitive!]
Now look around for the exact charcters WITH the quotes: "nv"
Press insert on your kb and add idia to it, so it says "nvidia", then hit Esc
Type this with the colon ... :write
It should confirm that you've written to the file.
Type :q (with colon)
Now type startx and see how it goes! If it fails, try restarting.
after installing the NVkernel module (which is the kernel support for NVidia chipsets) and the actual drivers (NVIDIA-GLX_*), edit your /etc/X11/XF86config file and replace the "nv" with "nvidia", then go to the module section and make sure you have there "Load glx", remove "Load dri" and "Load glcore". then it should normally work.
go to http://www.easylinuxguide.com and click the link that says "installing nvidia drivers." I followed the instructions exactly and got it working fine. Make sure to look under the heading that says "installing nvidia drivers for the first time"
side note: there's two lines in red at the bottom of the author's edited version of XF86Config that he says to take out, but I didn't and it still worked.
