I have today acquired an Acer Aspire One Netbook which is running Linpus Linux Lite O/S and I wondered if anyone could recommend a security suite please.
none needed
i take it you are thinking of the MS Windows ( required ) software like Norton, mcafee ,...
there is a anti virus package , to scan for MS Windows viruses , so you don't give them to somebody
It's called ClamAV there is also a rootkit scanner called Rkhunter and chkrootkit
about the only thing you might want to install is rkhunter and chkrootkit . but i have never had a problem found in the last 5 years .
Also ClamAV has ONLY found a problem on my Windows XP partition that Norton MISSED , there has NEVER been one on linux
a good fire wall is needed .But most Linux distros have ipTables installed by default .I don't use limpus light ( in my opinion it is a piece of junk with NO SOFTWARE to install. Built around a OLD and unsupported hacked version of fedora )
firestarter is a good gui but the default settings of the laptop should be fine .
Thank you again. My netbook doesn't seem to allow any downloads, including Firestarter and Avast. I phoned Acer and they said that no protection is needed with Linux, so I guess I'll just have to go with that.
After that, you can install software from the repositories. iptables, firestarter and chkrootkit are there and you should be able to install them. I did not install them (yet), so can not tell you exactly what the procedure will be.
I did check yesterday and iptables is not installed by default on the AAO.
Thank you for this very useful information. I have now enabled the Advanced Menu and managed to install Avast but nothing else, alas! However, will keep pursuing and at least am going in the right direction.
Now I have mangaged to download Firestarter but it won't work and shows:-
"Failed to start the firewall - your kernel does not support iptables - please check your network device settings and make sure your internet connection is active".
The internet is active but all of this is meaningless to me and I wish I had got an XP machine!!
I would really appreciate if someone could throw some light on this.
iptables is the administration tool for the kernel's packet filtering (in laymans terms the firewall). firestarter takes a lot of the pain away of the configuration of iptables.
you can find iptables in the repository as well (as I mentioned earlier)
I can imagine. It's also not very relevant, but you asked
Good luck with whatever you're going to do.
BTW, iptables is usually part of a Linux installation, Linpus is the first 'modern' one that I see where it's not installed by default; but OK, I only have experience with Slackware, Ubuntu and (recently) Linpus.
Thank you for the good luck and also for the suggestions.
I've been in touch with the netbook supplier and they have also suggested downloading a different version of Linux so I will have a look into this. How difficult is it to remove Linpus though? I don't like the restrictions it imposes - not a friendly environment for a potential Windows convert! I'm deliberating between pursuing this or else taking the easy option of Windows 7.
Bye the way, ESET is developing a security suite for Linux O/S which will be available at the end of the year.
