Question Less HW support in RH9? Please explain...

Hey all,

Question:
When I install RH8 on my Toshiba Satellite Laptop with my 40GB Iomega USB HDD attached, it finds it with no propblem. When I install RH9 with the same setup, it does not find the external USB Drive.

Wouldn't you think that Redhat would have more hardware support in a newer version?

Yet another question:
Could it be the fact that the version of RH8 that I installed was off the internet, and the version of RH9 was Redhat9 personal edition (bought off the shelf at CompUSA)?

Hmm....

it's most likely the kernel config that is different.
have you tried to load the usb modules.

probably a good place to start is to check and see what's loaded with this..

lsmod

then this..

cat /etc/sysconfig/hwconf

then we can go from there

DavidPhillips,

I appreciate your post, and I know about all that stuff. I was just wondering why they wouldn't have the modules already incorporated into the kernel?

Seems dumb.

So your saying the modules are not there for you hardware, or they are not loaded?

if they are not there then I guess that is pretty lame.

YO,

They are not there at all. I should have been more specific. It's like Redhat just says " hey lets take this out of this build, they don't need it ".

What a joke. It's not that I can't get it to work, it's simply stupid that it works out of the box with RH8 but not RH9.

Yep,

I'm using RH 7.3 on my machine.

I'm happy with it. Not sure I want to change yet. I tried 8 and did not like it. Too many changes.

Regressions happen in all complex pieces of software. Bugzilla is the place for this, not here.

hey, he has a REALLY good point. live with it or get a NEW kernel anyways.
