LDAP is the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, i.e. it's a directory service. For example Microsoft Active Directory is based on LDAP. You can use it for many things, such as keeping a directory of names and addresses or of system users. With the LDAP pluggable authentication module, you can even have system users authenticate themselves from a LDAP directory and thus maintain a common list of users and credentials between systems.

LDAP is the most widely used protocol to access directory services.

FTP is designed to allow transfer of files, LDAP is designed to allow querying and updating directory entries, these are different businesses.

If you mean "how can I install and configure my own LDAP directory ?", then OpenLDAP is a common answer.
