konsole schemas??

i don't know why, but i am having some real problems getting colors to work on this thing. i don't understand what the shell colors tab does or the konsole colors tab. i've tried going trhough the set schemas but i can't figure out why some things are highlighted different in vi. sometimes the colors are too dark, sometimes they're too light, sometimes they're not even what the colors i thought they'd be.

can anyone help me figure out how to work this contraption?
