Hello all,
I posted a while back about creating a new distro, since then many things have happened. Firstly we have decided on a name, “Keto Core Linux”, well it’s a beta name at the moment and may be change at a later stage. Basically it is said “Key-2” – “It’s your Key-To a Linux powered future.”
At the moment we would like to start of by basing Keto on an existing distro (similar to what a large amount of others have done… pclinux OS, Cent OS etc) so my question to you is what one?
We have been very interested and followed the progression of Freespire, I know many people do not agree with some of the ethics behind Linspire but from what I have found out it makes lots of tasks very easy (i.e. Networking.)
The requirements for the distro would be:
- Emphasis on simplicity (easy to use for newbie’s)
- Power and stability (currently the downside of freespire)
- Driver support
The Keto Core website will be online soon. I am currently sponsoring the development but am hoping to gain some more support soon. If you would like to join the Keto Dev Team please email me.
Seems like a combination of advertising and asking us what you should do....
If you are surveying for what people would like to see in a new distro, then my opinion is that the field is already saturated. 99.99% of all current or potential Linux users will find what they need in the existing range of choices.
More generally, to start a new venture, you will need a vision of how it will be unique and different--how it will add value. That vision will probably not come from us.
I do not mean to advertise, that is the last thing on my mind at the moment (I was simply giving people the opportunity to join something that in time will be a big project). All I really want is opinions on what distro's people think/would like to see it based on. Keto is going to be different... We have a vision and I’m know for a fact it is a great one. We really just want people to give us ideas and help us mold the base of the OS. There is always room for another distro, just because many exist it doesn’t mean people should give up making their own/new ones. Red Hat dominates quite a bit of the commercial market but we still see new distro's being made to try take its place/expand the market, if everyone took what you just said we would have a limited number of distro's and the extremely fast progression Linux on a whole is making would be slowed down. Linux is in most cases os a community driven effort and we don't want to change this. Linux communities are full of valuable information and opinion. If i could i would post this on every Linux forum i could find. We want to be successful and having the wisdom of communities on our side will help us make the right steps and skip making stupid mistakes.
We are taking this head on and trying to develop something that will be as big and popular as Mandriva, Red Hat, Ubuntu... Sorry if this post was a bit defensive but I felt I was attacked.
So I will ask the question again but to the point. What distro would you like to see the new Keto Core Linux based on?
