Kernel Suggestion?

I am using an old P4 1.6GHz CPU w/o Hyper Threading. I just wanted to make sure the obvious choice was the "right" choice.

Code:

If, by obvious, you mean "linux-image-2.6.16-2-686", then yes, that is the correct choice. On another note, I'd hardly call that system "old".

Oh trust me...it's old.

P4 1.6Ghz
512 PC133MHz RAM

It does not even have DDR ram...

Eh, I sometimes feel my computer is old... it's a tad newer, but it's still 3 years old... feels so behind the technology.

I just like the fact that I run Linux on older hardware that is "Optimized" for Windows

This is just my practice box. I run everything else on my new AMD64 3800+ with 4GB or DDR PC3200 RAM. Even as cool as the new box is, I like using the old one and honestly don't see a difference.

AMD64 would be nice.

At some point I'll have to build myself an AMD64 X2 box.

Even though I have an AMD64 CPU, I still use i386 versions of Linux because somethings are not there for the AMD64 versions of Linux. For instance, no Flash plugin for Firefox and I really don't know what the alternatives are...

You could still use a 64 bit kernel, but just run the 32 bit firefox and plugins.

I guess I am confused. When I install Debian via amd64 iso, it loads gnome and firefox be default which would also be 64 bit version...Can I install the i386 version of Debian and then just upgrade to a amd64 bit kernel or will that only work if I boot from the amd64 iso cd?

I would advocate installing the amd64 Debian, then installing the i386 Firefox and plugins. This article is focused on Ubuntu, but most of it applies to Debian as well.
