I am using an old P4 1.6GHz CPU w/o Hyper Threading. I just wanted to make sure the obvious choice was the "right" choice.

I just like the fact that I run Linux on older hardware that is "Optimized" for Windows
This is just my practice box. I run everything else on my new AMD64 3800+ with 4GB or DDR PC3200 RAM. Even as cool as the new box is, I like using the old one and honestly don't see a difference.
Even though I have an AMD64 CPU, I still use i386 versions of Linux because somethings are not there for the AMD64 versions of Linux. For instance, no Flash plugin for Firefox and I really don't know what the alternatives are...

You could still use a 64 bit kernel, but just run the 32 bit firefox and plugins.
I guess I am confused. When I install Debian via amd64 iso, it loads gnome and firefox be default which would also be 64 bit version...Can I install the i386 version of Debian and then just upgrade to a amd64 bit kernel or will that only work if I boot from the amd64 iso cd?
I would advocate installing the amd64 Debian, then installing the i386 Firefox and plugins. This article is focused on Ubuntu, but most of it applies to Debian as well.
