Kernel Panic can not find init image

Hello

I have recentley downloaded and compiled the 2.6.5 kernel, I received a few warning messages and deprecated modules, nothing big. the steps I took are as follows

make bzImage
make modules
modules_install

copy new image to boot directory
copy new system map to boot directory

mkinitrd linux-2.6.5.img 2.6.5

edit grub

grub-install

everything seems to work fine then I restart the computer boot to the new image and WHAMMY!!!

Kernel panic can't find init image.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to solve this problem?

Sorry I don't have a more informative posting.

TIA
Dave

you did a mkinitrd linux-2.6.5.img. Try making it a initrd-2.6.5.img using the same steps or simply renaming it with "mv oldfile newfile"

I had a similar problem, but I solved it. Some other file has the call to initrd-2.6.5.img in it and the name must be an initrd-2.6.5.img

After that it should boot smoothly.

Thanks for the reply marghorp. I do not need a rescue cd I still boot the old kernel since i never wiped it. I just wanted to upgrade to the 2.6.5 kernel. I have configured and compiled kernels before and had them work, this one is jus being stuborn.

sorry about that. I am curently upgrading to 2.6.5 too, but I compiled ext2 as a module the first time. Repairing it as I speak.

similar error in mdk 10.1

it's been almost a year since i "squeezed" in mdk 10.1 onto the freespace left (by WinXP) on my sister's PC which i got from college and gave to her. One fine day, the keyboard conks off and the person who comes to repair (unfortunately in my absence) screws up the MDK 10.1 installation miraculously enough to reduce it to the kernel panic message being discussed in this thread.

I know my sister hadn't had a hand in it as the PC is 'far' from any internet connection and i've made her username (non-root) to auto-login as she used it maximum to play some games, and some other stuff....no kernel stuff, no apps install/uninstall.

It is very difficult to trace the problem as MDK 10.1 download edition is just one CD...no rescue disks made.

How can I get my Mandrake partition working again?

Please Help!
