kernel-multimedia

Hi,
I am iinstalling the kernel-multimedia-2.6.7-1.mm.7mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm for mandrake 10.1
to enable me to have sound using the on board SB live that ships with Dell Dimensions.
I have no trouble installing the kernel, but when i try to boot the kernel it hangs after the boot splash screen comes up. When i switch to a different tty I displays the message Enviroment varible HOME is not defined.
I log in to tty1 and run command echo $HOME and I gives the path of my home directory.
Has anyone else had the same trouble when installing this kernel, or could anyone point me to a how-to for the installation of this kernel.
Cheers
