kernel config, cant enable patch

I downloaded a kernel patch from ebtables.sourceforge.net and put it on my 2.4 kernel then went into xconfig. I first enabled 802.1d ethernet bridging and the patch I downloaded is suposed to allow me to enable a sub-option called "Bridge: ebtables" and that has its own sub-options, but the "Bridge: ebtables" just stays grey so that I cant enable it (as do its sub-options).

I tried using menuconfig thinking that there was something wrong with xconfig, but it too wouldnt allow me to select the "Bridge: ebtables" option. does anyone else know what I should do to allow me to select this option that this kernel patch is suposed to enable.

How did you apply the patch, command used, etc? Any errors?

cd /usr/src/linux-2.4.22/
gzip ebtables-brnf-3_vs_2.4.22.diff.gz
patch -p1 < ebtables-brnf-3_vs_2.4.22.diff

and I recieved no errors

(im aware that .22 is old, but when with 56k, im not about to go and download 2.4.23 (or 4) untill I have configured it successfully, then it would be just a matter of installing and patching the source and adding the config file)
