you know what, i don't know anything about mandrake. sorry. i reccomend you switch to slackware. definitely a better distro that "added drives" thing sounds totally foreign to me and really weird (almost like something windows would do... ewww...). that would never happen with slack.

Actually, I don't know (which makes my post kind of useless...) but I have had problems with using the stock kernel. At least I remember from my sessions of recompiling the kernel that the supermount didn't work anymore when I used the stock kernel, which isn't very strange since it is Mandrake's own stuff.

BTW, when you do the mrproper, doesn't that delete the .config file also? Would give strange results when you do the make oldconfig, I guess.

I've tried to just take the 2.4.22 kernel from Mandrake 9.2, but I ended up in the infamous dependency hell...

It does, which makes 'make oldconfig' somewhat useless, unless you saved your previous configuration, which I did. If I were to download the stock 2.4.22 kernel (which I already have) and compile it from scratch, how do I know what I need? I know I have to insert the following

ACPI
I2C
my soundcard and network card drivers

Now, as far as everything else that is turned off, should I worry about it, or let it go? The thing that bugs me most is the CD rom issue that I cant seem to get fixed, as well as the mouse issue.

if you're going to recompile your kernel, get the source from kernel.org and do either a make menuconfig or a make xconfig on it. you'll have to know what hardware you have exactly. you probably won't get it exactly right on the first try, so keep your old kernel image or a bootdisk and save your configuration from your make *config to a file so you can load it again later and modify that.
