BTW, when you do the mrproper, doesn't that delete the .config file also? Would give strange results when you do the make oldconfig, I guess.

It does, which makes 'make oldconfig' somewhat useless, unless you saved your previous configuration, which I did. If I were to download the stock 2.4.22 kernel (which I already have) and compile it from scratch, how do I know what I need? I know I have to insert the following
ACPI
I2C
my soundcard and network card drivers
Now, as far as everything else that is turned off, should I worry about it, or let it go? The thing that bugs me most is the CD rom issue that I cant seem to get fixed, as well as the mouse issue.
