jazzed up mbr?

So, my debian system is running fine, I get vmware, the nvidia drivers, and other packages installed fine. Everything works fine except and occasional moment where the keyboard freezes in kde. One day the entire system freezes and will not boot. Instead at boot I get a screen full of "99 99 99 99 99....". Any ideas wtf happened? I've tried to use tom's boot disk to rerun lilo and I did, but it didn't do anything.

Now I have the /boot directory on /dev/hda3 as well as I had moved it from there to /dev/hda1 directly after installing Debian via Knoppix.

Any Ideas?

I fixed the mbr issue by installing grub to the mbr using a knoppix disk. Then when booting i made initrd = /dev/hda3/etc/init (despite what all the directions said). Once this was done I did an update-grub to create the menu.lst file. Then I ran grub , put in the parameters and did a setup(hd0) to get it to automatically boot. Now if I can only get the vmware app to stop causing my keyboard to freeze in kde...
