Question Japanese codepage

I have a VFAT partition with Japanese files and directories on.
I can mount the thing but I only see ?????? ????.

I've built my kernel to support the Japanese code page.
I mount as follows...

mount -t vfat -o codepage=932 /dev/hda2 mnt/hda2

This works, and if I type mount again, I see...

/dev/hda2 on /mnt/hda2 type vfat (rw,codepage=932)

It LOOKS like it works, but it doesn't. In fact, I can type in anything after -o and it still does the same, like...

mount -t vfat -o blahblah=abc /dev/hda2 mnt/hda2

Shows...

/dev/hda2 on /mnt/hda2 type vfat (rw,blahblah=abc)

Is this working, but I just can't see the funny Japanese squiggles?
Is it possible to make the kernel boot up in Japanese?

Please help.

Try this also :

mount -t vfat -o iocharset=euc-jp,codepage=932 /dev/hda2 /mnt/hda2

No. It won't even boot up in Finnish. I believe that language support can only be enabled at the login script stage (which is probably best anyway).
