Question Is there a memory based drive, that isn't SSD?

My motherboards max ram is 8G and I have 8G installed and tend to use 8G. I was looking for ways to extend that without the need for a new motherboard.

So I was wondering a few things.

1. Is there any PCI card out there that you can add DDR2 memory to? To be used as additional ram or as a type of SSD drive? (if swap is mounted to it we don't care if it loses the memory on a reboot)

2. Is there a way of in linux of specifying a mount point for disk cache? ie to use such a card or even a SSD card to cache data for read/write? Mostly looking for read cache.

We looked at these some time ago. Although they are "Flash" their documentation talks about them being ECC and other protections they've put into them.

We never actually got them (we were looking more at disk array solutions and only looked at these cards for a possible proof of concept we decided not to do).

You might also consider actually using an external array for your storage instead of in the box as many of those have their own cache and caching methodologies that can help performance quite a bit. The above company sells some of those as well (including some that are based on DRAM rather than Flash). We use EMC Clariion and DMX for our big storage needs and the caching helps quite a bit. Also with external arrays you can often do things like RAID 10 that might not be available on in the server RAID controllers.

If you have a ton of money try one of these babies. http://www.fusionio.com/

I think you may be able to use swapboost. http://www.winmatrix.com/forums/inde...ost-for-linux/
