Is there a knack to sendmail?

How do you send the mail after you've sent the mail to sendmail? Is there some command that you have to process or is it a scheduled operation or wat?

I don't know the answer to your question, well not exactly.

I use sendmail as well, but I hit send, and then when I check my email to make sure it went out (about 3 minutes later) it's there. So I think it just automatically goes once you hit send. It may just do it on a regular basis but I am not sure. It's kind of like the US Postal Service. I put a letter in the mailbox, but from there all I know is that it does get to it's destination, I am not sure how though.

I use mandrake 8.1 and have a DSL connection. I use kmail to send my email, so if this is your setup as well, I would guess the same thing happens to you.

Smile Thanx

Thanx 4 ur reply.. I suppose it's just one of those things. I had installed sendmail today, and used it to send mail. Never went, so I posted to this forum. Then I rebooted to get into XP to let my father check his mail (I know u can import OE5 into KMail but he insists!!

Then, when he was finished, boot back into Mandrake (8.2). Progress bar after kernel begins stops and stalls on around 70%. Great! CTRL+ALT+DEL to reboot and tries again. Same thing. Tried the non-graphical bootup option in LILO and sure enough it was sendmail causing it to stall. Shite. Wat do I do now? So I ran failsafe and disabled it in the boot sequence.

Phew! And I have Leaving Cert exams next year! Stress! I though the system was shagged, but thankfully no.
Slan, agus go raibh mile maith agat ar son an cabhair a thabhairt tu dom.

Peter.

Weird - I use Mandrake 8.1 too - but the MTA mine is using is postfix, not sendmail.

I'd recommend changing over from one to the other for a number of reasons :

1) Sendmail is pretty decrepit. It's been around for donkeys years and was never written with the evils of the modern internet in mind. It's had a lot of vulnerabilities exposed in it over the years - and has more patches than a rubber ring being used by a porcupine to go swimming...

2) The configuration for it is a nightmare. No understatement here. You have to write a Meta-config file (itself not very pretty), which is then processed by a macro language which turns it into the real config file for Sendmail because the real config file is too complicated for a human to write. That is the worst thing I've ever heard

3) Postfix, the other MTA which comes with Mandrake 8.1 - is easily configurable from the GUI using the WizDrake tools - so you don't have to get down and dirty with the actual config files itself...

That being said - whichever MTA you go for, Sendmail, QMail or postfix, they all work pretty much automagically. Your mail client shoves mail in it's direction, and the MTA hurls it feet first at the internet - without you having to do much....

Bry
