Question Is it that important to have the latest version of compilers such as gcc or javac?

I've been using gnu/linux for a few months and i can't decide what distro i should use.
I mostly use geany and gcc for c programming or opendjk for java programming. With that said, i don't know whether i should use a cutting edge distro or use an old version of gcc and javac.
What do you say, is it better to have a stable distro or a cutting edge one for software development?
I would prefrerably install a fsf endorsed distro, but that's not so important. Thanks in advance and sorry for any spelling mistakes(English's not my first language xD)

Do you plan to use a version of the language that you'd need the newer compiler for?

If you plan to use C++11, for example, you want an up-to-date compiler.

If you want write Java 8, then a Java 6 compiler won't do.

yes, i want to use java 8, but apart from that, if i don't use a newer version of the language, is it advisable to use an old version of the compiler?

I'd say it doesn't matter then.
