Unhappy Is Debian better?

Hello,

I have tried Knoppix and Slax on CD. They load and they look good on the desktop--but no matter what i do, i can't get on the internet with them. My modem (Agere) does not seem to work with either Linux system. I have been told that Debian might work. I don't want to download Debian if it won't work with the agere modem--i have dial up, which takes forever. Any ideas?

knoppix is based on debian!

do you have an internal modem, or external? if external, is it connected with serial cable or usb?

AFAIK, to make your modem work you will have to have a distribution installed (as opposed to LiveCD ones) - be it Debian, Gentoo, Mandriva, Fedora, or whatever - because you're either going to install a driver binary package, or to compile it from source yourself.

There are some ready-made Agere binary drivers for some distros (Gentoo, Debian, Fedora, Red Hat, Suse...) available here:

http://www.physcip.uni-stuttgart.de/heby/ltmodem/

Note that it is said there that this is the driver for modems:

Quote:
with Lucent Apollo (ISA) and Mars (PCI) chipsets. Lucent AMR modems are not supported by this driver.
So you'll have to double check which one is yours. It is also said there that SuSe ships with this driver included, so that may be your best bet for easy install. However, you can choose any other distro mentioned there just as well.

You may find additional info on modems in Linux here:

http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/

It's been a while since I used dial-up, and I never had an Agere modem, so this is the best I can come up with - hope it helps.

agere modem

Hello,

The agere modem is a internal modem. I will go to the modem sites & check out the info. I am going to a friend's house who has high speed dialup & download Debian. I was told that this one would be good to start with and learn linux.

Thank You for the info
