AFAIK, to make your modem work you will have to have a distribution installed (as opposed to LiveCD ones) - be it Debian, Gentoo, Mandriva, Fedora, or whatever - because you're either going to install a driver binary package, or to compile it from source yourself.
There are some ready-made Agere binary drivers for some distros (Gentoo, Debian, Fedora, Red Hat, Suse...) available here:
http://www.physcip.uni-stuttgart.de/heby/ltmodem/
Note that it is said there that this is the driver for modems:
Quote:
with Lucent Apollo (ISA) and Mars (PCI) chipsets. Lucent AMR modems are not supported by this driver.

So you'll have to double check which one is yours. It is also said there that SuSe ships with this driver included, so that may be your best bet for easy install. However, you can choose any other distro mentioned there just as well.
You may find additional info on modems in Linux here:

It's been a while since I used dial-up, and I never had an Agere modem, so this is the best I can come up with - hope it helps.
