Post Internal Modems and Linux

Anybody have ANY idea how to get Internal Modems to work with Linux? I have an internal modem on my desktop PC which I can't get to work under Mandrake Linux 9.0. My laptop is dual booting Windows XP and Mandrake Linux 9.0, and the modem works fine under Windows, but when I configure it in Mandrake Linux to use COM3 (which is the Windows port) it doesn't work!!!

Any thoughts??? I know Internal modems are awful things to set up in Linux - a friend of mine has had similar problems

The Linux equivalent of the COM ports are /dev/ttySx, where x is the COM port number -1. However, the modem usually defaults to /dev/ttyS0.

Many internal modems are winmodems, and as such, only work in Windows. If you want to get another modem, try a Creative Modem Blaster ISA. Mine took downwards of 5 seconds to configure. I had much trouble with my Modem Blaster PCI and my Lucent Winmodem, so you're not alone.

You may want to try using the program setserial.

double_oh_sammy,

I'm assuming that you have a winmodem. If so, you can search this forum for "winmodem" and find a lot of good information.

Also, you can go to http://www.linmodems.org/, they have a scanModem tool that will help you determine your chipset information.

Aye, it is a winmodem. I found a driver for it, but it doesnt seem to be working. Oh well - I'll probably invest in an external modem if all else fails!!!

modems

I wouldn't bother with an external modem. Just get a good non-winmodem internal. I believe the winmodem driver site is www.linmodems.org or www.linmodem.org . I (among many others) have gotten this driver to work in linux, though I did have to do some hacking (though again, that was over a year or two ago.)

Gluck.
