Installing glib 1.2.6 problems

At first, I will say I'm french, so, sorry for my "english speaking"
(I hope I'll understand any help...)
This is my problem :
I have linux mandrake 8.1. I've tried to install gtk+ 1.2.6 and configuration program said he needs glib 1.2.4 or higher. I've installed glib 1.2.6, and then, when I've tryed to install gtk+, he said that I must set the GLIB_CONFIG environement varaibles to the PATH of glib_config.
But I don't how to do that.
So, I've tryed to do that : "./configure --with-glib-prefix=/usr/local"
Gtk+ configuration program have found the file glib-config, but he said that I must delete and old version of glib (1.2.10), and modify "/etc/ld.so.conf".
I don't know what to do and how ...
Help !
