Question installing Debian jessie to a chroot on ubuntu

hi I am trying to install Debain jessie to a chroot environment on my current install of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. I'm wanting the benefit of being able to run and test Debian without having to run a dual boot. I am still new to using chroot but am familiar with the uses.

after doing a web search on how to I followed the basic instructions from
https://www.digitalocean.com/communi...untu-12-04-vps

and used this as a reference https://www.debian.org/releases/stab...apds03.html.en

Code:
sudo debootstrap --variant=buildd --arch amd64 jessie /test/ http://httpredir.debian.org/debian
when I got to
Code:
sudo chroot /test /usr/sbin/debootstrap --second-stage
it gave the message
Quote:
chroot: failed to run command ‘/debootstrap/debootstrap’: No such file or directory
any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance.

I've never done things like that, but instead if you wish to explore Debian while keeping your Ubuntu machine the same, then why not just load Debian under VirtualBox?

yes, you can try virtualbox or docker containers. see https://www.docker.com/

There's no need to use the --second-stage option. Also, you would use that command after you chroot into the Debian environment.

Your commands should look like this:

Code:
debootstrap --variant=buildd --arch amd64 jessie /test http://httpredir.debian.org/debian
cp /etc/mtab /test/etc/mtab
mount -o bind /dev /test/dev
mount -o bind /proc /test/proc
mount -o bind /sys /test/sys
chroot /test /bin/bash
Since your host is Ubuntu, use sudo where necessary.

There's a how-to here, that goes into more detail.
