Installation Q:

First of all,I'm new to the site and to Linux. I'm trying to install Ubuntu as a third OS,It's on one hdd.I know nothing about Linux,i have only read about it.
When i load it for the first time I'm sure it'll ask to format the drive as does windows. Will the Linux set the partition to fat32,Ive read thats what it uses.
I have win XP & vista on the other partition and they are NTFS and thats what win formated it to.Ive been reading alot about how everyone set up their HDD but its very confusing.

While linux does recognize Fat32 and NTFS partitions, it is not what is used when formatting a partition for linux. The choices are ususally ext2, ext3, reiserfs, jfs and others.

I believe Ubuntu uses ext3 by default. However, I'm sure someone will correct me with the right information.

BTW here's a nice guide for Ubuntu http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper.

Yep, Ubuntu uses ext3 by default.

The partitioning section of the installation program will take care of all of this for you.

Before you install Ubuntu, defrag your HDD in windows, and backup any important data incase anything goes wrong.

Basically, you need two partitions for a Linux install, of for the OS (/) and one called "swap". There should be an option to automatically partition, which should do this for you. Make sure you check what it wants to do before you click OK.

There is some good info about installing Ubuntu Here

I hope this helps
