The MBR is the Master Boot Record - it comes with the disk drive and is not a seperate partition that you have to install.

Since you have installed 7 from the same drive, I guess that the DVD drive is set as the first boot device and you rebooted with the DVD in the drive - is that correct?

How do you know the DVD is not detected?

In that case, perhaps the DVD has not been burned properly. Do it again on a slow speed.

OK - if your DVD was not recognised, your computer would have booted instead to Windows... same as if there was no DVD in there at all.

I don't know what you mean by this.
Normally you would enter the BIOS setup on your computer and change the boot order there so that the DVD drive is first. That way you do not need to mess about forcing anything with a key press of any kind. It is just automatic.

Try this and see.

However - it looks like the DVD is being recognised but it does not know what to do.
Did you make sure you have obtained the PPC version of Debian? Can you tell me which ISO you burned?

Now I am understanding you better. You are doing the right thing, and the DVD is recognised as mac-bootable, and the mac is trying to boot off it (why you get a black screen with a white "-" dash flashing on it.)

You want the i386 or the x64 images should be fine - make sure they are burned at a slow speed - no more than 8x.

"This program can record .iso images on Windows 2003, XP and Vista."

That's great

- curious, 64 bit machines usually work with 32 bit OSs.

- note, when burning an iso, it is important to use a program which allows you to change the write speed to something slow.

I usually suggest a free software program like InfraRecorder.

ISO Recorder license depends on which edition you have. At least one version seems to be open source, at least in principle.

v1. allows redistribution of unmodified binaries only.
v2. seems to allow unrestricted redistribution of source code - no clear way to get the source, perhaps you have to contact the owner?
v3. has no license statement - implying "all right reserved" - maybe the licence is in the zip?

createCD. has a non-commercial (personal use) license.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply you didn't. Do I understand by your statement, then, that the version of ISO Recorder you installed is licensed under GNU GPL?

That would be useful information.
