Independent Update Agent?

Anyone heard of an independent update agent that scans a system for files that correspond to an existing repository, creates a map, and updates independent of the distro?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply.

Well, I moving from RH to another distro, although I haven't decided on which distro yet. I liked RH up2date, because I knew when there was an update for apps. If I wanted to update, then I did. If not, well...I didn't.

I don't know if this was clear before. Many distros have something like this, although one might have to cronjob the process.

Is that what you thought I was mentioning? I don't know if that is what you meant by "automatic updating". Just looking for a way to keep my system up2date without having to hunt things down myself.

I was thinking that most systems could be scanned to see what is installed, for the most part, a list is made, and then a correspondance checking to a db on a website would let one know when an app was available. I would imagine that is how it is done with RH and others anyway. Or is this expecting too much uniformity. lol

Again, thanks for responding.
