Increasing X window size

Hello
For some reason, when I startx, the window is very small. There is a black border running around the screen that is maybe 1 inch wide, and the mouse will not move into that area. I have a 17 inch monitor, IBM G70. Also, even in console mode, the same border is there. I suppose Linux thinks the screen is smaller than it really is. I have tried using startx -geometry to resize, but no luck. The default screen is 1024x768, or /et/X11/XF86Config-4 says it is. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thank you.

ctl-alt-+ will change your resolution, but I think you just need to adjust your monitor controls.
