If I compile a new kernel, how much of my stuff is going to break?

I'm thinking that most stuff should run ok but will I need to re-compile any libraries etc?

Should I just wait for a newer Distro?

You don't run lib's when recompiling the kernel. Do you have a reason to recompile? Really no reason unless there is some kind of security flaw in the current kernel your using or you need to compile support for some hardware that isn't supported by default, etc.

Actually its because USB support is meant to be better in 2.4.21... But I can get by without it.

If you compiled any second-hand drivers, such as a video driver for ati or nvidea, or lm_sensors modules, then you'll need to redo all those.

But other than that, not much.
