I deleted a file and It wont boot up

I wanted to delete a program from /user/share and I ended up deleting a couple of wrong directories. now my machine wont boot up. could I just upgrade my fedora 10 to fedora 11 and the files might come back? or do I need to completely reinstall Fedora?

thanks

What files did you delete? You might be able to just reinstall a couple of packages and get things back. You might also be able to boot in recovery mode, then bring copies of the files in from another system.

It is seldom necessary to completely reinstall Linux. Probably in this case it is not the most efficient choice, unless you do not know what you deleted.

Highly unlikely. Depends of your mount points and where your stuff was.

What did you actually delete? the whole /usr ?

I am not sure what I deleted I saw what I did and in a panic hit the power button. (Nobody told me about ctrl-c) It seems to load fine but after the fedora loading bars are done it just sits there with a mouse and a little circle thing that could spin for days. I dont know exactly what files (in /usr/share) I deleted but it was about 3 Folders/programs that got deleted. could I just update Fedora and the files would be restored or re installed?

Umm.. so you could just CTRL + ALT + F1 (or ALT + F1)to the shell and log in there?

I havenīt used fedora dist. so i donīt know if thereīs a way to swich to more verbose mode during boot so we could see where it hangs.

I tried both of those during boot up and neither did anything.

"Also, most distributions have it set up so that if you hit 'F2' during the boot process, verbose mode will come up."

I dunno what to do beyond this. I think you should anyhow be able to boot that system to some point. Someone else with beter knowledge could take over. Installing/upgrading to new one also could work but youīd have to be careful about the partitioning/formatting etc.

dunno if this helps but when I restart the machine the list of services shutting down shows up. the only 2 that say "FAILED" are the sshd service and the NMB service

In fedora 10 you would need to press ctrl + Alt + F2 to get to a command terminal - see if that lets you log in, then my first step would be yum reinstall (failing packages) then check the /var/log/messages
