How to upgrade RPM?

I have tried to install a few applications using the current rpm. I get error
messages saying that "only packags with major numbers <=3 are supprted
by this version or RPM". I understand that I have an older version of
RPM (3.0.4).
I tried to install the new RPM from Redhat CD (rpm4) using the command
rpm -i rpm-4.0.x....rpm.
but I get the same message as above.

Can someone help me with upgrading my rpm package.? I am using SuSE 7.0.

i would recommend that u copy all the rpm related files into a separate folder and as root change 2 that folder and issue the command:

rpm -Fvh *.rpm

not sure if it'll work with suse but try it.

Or rpm -Uvh <filename>.rpm

I tried both the methods, but got the same error message (as in my earlier post).
Any alternate ideas?
