I would like to connect to my home Red Hat 9 machine from my work Win XP Pro machine, but I was wondering if it is possible to see my desktop(or at least a representation of it from my WinXP Machine. I can ssh into the terminal which is fine for just about everything but there must be a way to do this and see my desktop. I've checked this forum and see that people are using VNC. I installed vncserver on my linux machine but when I connect all I can see is a terminal window.

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I am really stuck here.

Your probably want to add a command to start a window manager like kde:
startkde

VNC doesn't allow you to connect to the console (display "0") by default, but I hear version 4 (www.realvnc.com) will allow you to do this. I have a script that creates the vnc connection as needed, and I do so via ssh console.

there is rfb to help you achieve that or x11vnc
