lspci will tell you the revision number of your USB controller.

It should show you something like this:
0000:00:04.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 USB (rev 02)

The (rev 02) tells you it's USB 2.0.

Ah, then what does this mean (from my 4 years old desktop):

00:1f.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801BA/BAM USB (Hub #1) (rev 04)

USB 4? Sorry, bigrigdriver, don't mean to make fun of you, I'm actually quite interested in this question too.

I think lsusb shows what USB version your controller(s) support, but I myself don't know what to look for.

Aha, I think I'm on to something. On the Gentoo Linux USB Guide it ways that one should look for "EHCI" in the lspci USB Controller output, i.e.
Code:
00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corp. 82801DB USB EHCI Controller (rev 01) (prog-if 20 [EHCI])
Also, I noticed that /proc/bus/usb/devices contains useful information, like this:
Code:
T: Bus=02 Lev=00 Prnt=00 Port=00 Cnt=00 Dev#= 1 Spd=12 MxCh= 2
B: Alloc= 0/900 us ( 0%), #Int= 0, #Iso= 0
D: Ver= 1.10 Cls=09(hub ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS=64 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=0000 ProdID=0000 Rev= 2.06
S: Manufacturer=Linux 2.6.15.1 uhci_hcd
S: Product=UHCI Host Controller
S: SerialNumber=0000:00:1f.4
C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=c0 MxPwr= 0mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 1 Cls=09(hub ) Sub=00 Prot=00 Driver=hub
E: Ad=81(I) Atr=03(Int.) MxPS= 2 Ivl=255ms
The only instances of the string "1.10" in the output from lsusb -v on my machine are on the lines with "bcdUSB" and "bcdHID", so by induction we can conclude that this is what to look for.

Or not, I don't know Can someone confirm this?

(BTW, my desktop is so old so it should not support 2.0, that's why I'm only looking for 1.1 here.)
