I'd like to start messing around with my Linux box more so than I do now. What kind of things should I do on it? Example, what is Telnet and should I try that? I can't seem to install Limewire because I don't have the JVM installed. So I guess that could be another journey for me. Any other ideas?
you don't know what telnet is? criminy, that's windows level... i think *everyone* at my uni know what telnet is... but erm.. no you don't want it, it's insecure and old old old. use ssh instead. go play!
where did you find out about limewire? everyone keeps going on about it all over the place, and no one seems to know that there are other BETTER, FASTER and EASIER clients around... look for gtk-gnutella or qtella for a start.
erm, if you get a gnutella client going, and a decent net connectino, i'd suggest looking at divx programs, mplayer and xine especially...
I know what Telnet is but I've never used it before. LimeWire isn't working because of the JVM but it's not a big deal. Could you link me up to the client you've been talking about for the last 2 weeks please.
wow... how hard is it to use a search engine??!!!!???! you seriously expect to sit there and simply wait for someone to give you a url, how do you think i found it in the first place?! SEARCH! If therion12 can grasp that idea, ANYONE can... ;-)
Well for the last two weeks all he's said is gnutella. Which, as I understand, is some huge network of P2P sharing. Now that it has been narrowed down to gtk-gnutella I'll be able to find it. Chill out.
anyway telnet works fine for me and with it you can get a prompt at a remote machine running a telnet server just like a prompt if you were sitting at that machine.
You can activate the server in red hat by going to /etc/xinetd.d and opening the telnet file. Then change disable= yes to
disable =no.
Activate a telnet client in linux by going into terminal and typing
telnet ADDRESS TO CONNECT TO HERE
With windows you can go to run and type telnet to get a client.
