How much memory is used ?


Hi ,

I use fedora .

I want to know how much memory (RAM) I have and how much of it is used.

i issue the command free and I receive the next:

juanb 7888 7844 0 11:09 pts/0 00:00:00 grep snort
[juanb@sensjrdmz juanb]$ free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 190804 185668 5136 0 47756 71644
-/+ buffers/cache: 66268 124536
Swap: 393112 3788 389324

I cant understand the out put ,can someone help please ?

hi there
i loks fromthe output u posted that

toatal memnory u have id
192 MB(~~19084 KB)
used is 186 MB

and swap space is around 393 MB and used is 3.8 MB and free is around 388MB

maybe this will help u understand better

[root@gaurav root]# free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 256120 252452 3668 0 18460 105668
-/+ buffers/cache: 128324 127796
Swap: 0 0 0


i do not have swap space

Actually it looks like the box is 'using' about 67meg of the 192meg... The rest of the memory is used for cache and buffers... Linux always uses most of the ram in way way or another, but only the 67meg is currently tied up with apps here...

i missed out this point that the used memory also counts the buffer/cache involved

Not that your answer was wrong, I just wanted to clarify how the memory was used in case the original poster though all the memory was 'used up'
