How do you Rebuild a filesystem

Well, i'm in need of some knowledge here.

Can anyone tell me is it possible to rebuild a filesystem that is having problems being read upon boot up?

My /var partion is not being read and is possibly corrupt. However, I read somewhere that there is a command I can execute that will rebuild the filesystem for that partion.

Is that possible? If so, anyone have the command?

Thanks everyone.

I don't know if you really need or want to actually 'rebuild' the fs but you can fix any errors with the fsck command. Just make sure you do it with the fs NOT mounted or you'll have even more fun in your future.

Well, that turned out to the be the issue. My so called friend, ran a fsck check on the partition while it was mounted. I guess thats what pretty much blew out the partition.

THanks for the input.
