how do I stop X?

The instructions for the NVidia driversI just downloaded say I have to exit the X server, but don't say how. I know X is started by entering startx, so I tried "stopx" , but that didn't work.

Those sound like the nVidia video drivers, not the nVidia motherboard chipset drivers...

But you probably need to do /etc/init.d/kdm stop (or gdm or xdm) as root. It should drop you to a shell. Then you'll have to do everything from the command line.

Oops. Then I guess I'm stuck. But that's all Nvidia seems to offer.

This page, http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_nforce_1.23.html , indicates that I'm probably already supposed to have a SATA driver called sata_nv.c .
