How do I open/restore a file *.txt~

Hey,

I was innocently typing away in my text editor, gedit, and it was closed when I was still working, and of course I hadn't saved. So now I have this file, filename.txt~ in my working directory and when I tried to open it it said someone along the lines of "No program to open backup files". So, is there a way for me to retrieve my work from said backup file? Or am I best starting over?

Hope you can help, thanks

Just rename it and take the tilde off, then you can open it.

Renaming it would not alter its content, so it was empty before you renamed it.
