How can I tell which version of iptables is in a given kernel distribution?

kernel 2.4.18 to be precise - I installed it and an iptables -V tells me it's 1.2.3 but surely that isn't correct as that must be quite old by now. Or is it?

no, iptables was only introduced with the 2.4 kernel. before that it was ipchains, and before that, ipfwadm

I meant that the iptables version is coming up as 1.2.3 but surely it should be a later version? I am not sure if all is as it should be.

thanks for that- I just assumed that when I rebuilt my kernel 2.4.18 it would update iptables as well but I guess not....
