how can I check mail server that it is ready for receiving email


hello
I am writing an script for sending emails with ssmtp email client in an appropriate form.I want to know how can I check mail server that I want to send mail to it if it exist and ready to receive email or if not log an error .

The best way to test it is to run a telnet session from the
computer that will be sending email. You can telnet to port
25 and issue smtp keywords, and you should get appropriate
responses depending on how the server is configured.

Try doing a search for "smtp session telnet port 25" for
more info.

unfortunately the method that you said does not suitable for shell script programming because it stops after execution I am looking for a way that returns some thing after execution for making decision not stopping.
