Welcome to LQ.

My first suggestion would be to join the lkml mailing list and start submitting patches like the other kernel developers.

Learning to build your own Linux system From Scratch (we have a forum here for it) is a good step into knowing the ins and outs of the operating system as well, on a command-by-command level.

There isnt a science to it. In fact, if you use Linux then you are most likely a linux hacker. It takes a fair amount of hacking to tweak linux.

Just do as above, jump and start playing.

the majik formula is:
learn all the ins and outs of music theory
study esoteric religions
learn to like bad sci-fi movies
then become a tester on a project you like
use your real name not some crap like tripple_cow_power
and someday politely submit a good patch to something wrong with what you are testing

Never really thought of myself as a hacker....actually I've always had my white hat on...

but thats a good point Netizen, my boxes are hacked as hell to make 'em run just the way I like...

even though I DO NOT use them for malcontent.

guess it all depends on how you look at the word "hacker."

Just thinking out loud...sry.

You'll find a huge difference between what the tech community and the other half define hacker as... If you're asking about becoming a linux "cracker", breaking down security -- then perhaps you'd better visit another site.

If you want to learn how to customize, code, administer, and *use* linux -- then maybe hacking is the right term, and this is the site for you.

Get a basic Linux or Unix programming book and then write vast quantities of C code. I've heard that "Linux Programming by Example" by Arnold Robbins is good. Also a book by Wrox Press - something like Intermediate Linux Programming...

Read online forums. Read Linux magazines. Explore the file system.
