Learning to build your own Linux system From Scratch (we have a forum here for it) is a good step into knowing the ins and outs of the operating system as well, on a command-by-command level.
the majik formula is:
learn all the ins and outs of music theory
study esoteric religions
learn to like bad sci-fi movies
then become a tester on a project you like
use your real name not some crap like tripple_cow_power
and someday politely submit a good patch to something wrong with what you are testing
You'll find a huge difference between what the tech community and the other half define hacker as... If you're asking about becoming a linux "cracker", breaking down security -- then perhaps you'd better visit another site.
If you want to learn how to customize, code, administer, and *use* linux -- then maybe hacking is the right term, and this is the site for you.
Get a basic Linux or Unix programming book and then write vast quantities of C code. I've heard that "Linux Programming by Example" by Arnold Robbins is good. Also a book by Wrox Press - something like Intermediate Linux Programming...
Read online forums. Read Linux magazines. Explore the file system.
