Help with Midnight Commander (MC)

First I would like to say I am a total noob when it comes to linux. I don't use linux as an OS.

What I would like to do is use my Synology diskstation (which uses Linux) to transfer files to a remote target (a seagate goflex)

I have installed MC on my synology (since they don't have a FTP client), and I do not wish to copy huge amount of files on my computer, then use filezilla to transfer those to the remote target.

I use putty to connect to my synology and start MC. I want to be able to start transfer, but then close my computer (therefore closing my putty connection).

I have been told about "nohup". I tried it, but I do not know how I can "recall" it back. It also outputs a nohup.out file. Apparently it gets really big. What is the purpose?

I have heard about using "screen" instead. Could anyone give me a step by step how to use any of the 2 commands to achieve my purpose?

I haven't had to use nohup, but there is a man file for it.

See man nohup.

Here's an article that might help: http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/nohup-...ll-prompt.html

Thanks, I have tried that but I still have problems.

first, the "jobs" command does not work. It says it is not found.

If I use
> nohup mc $, mc starts in the background, but it does not start in order for me to initiate transfers. if I just start mc without nohup, I believe once I close putty, it will terminate that instance of mc.

I also do not know how to recall the nohup (as mentioned jobs command does not work), and mc is now in my processes consuming CPU

This is just a shot in the dark, but have you tried this?

Code:
ps -A | grep mc
kill [process numbers]
Also, if it's feasible, a good reboot cures many ills.

I can't say that I'm exactly clear on what you are trying to accomplish, but have you considered using scp or rsync, perhaps in a screen session?

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Synology does not know what -A does. (invalid option -- A).

However, I managed to just do "ps", then search for the mc PID and kill it with the kill command. So at least now I don't have to restart my diskstation every time.

I am still requiring help how to run mc with nohup. Once I start mc with nohup command "nohup mc &", how can I "access" it in order to perform tasks (copy files etc)?

In addition, is there any reason why using nohup mc & consumes 100% CPU, but if I run mc normally, it barely uses any?
