Hard drive errors installing Mandrake 8.0


I am trying to install Mandrake 8.0 on an X86 pc and keep getting the error

pci_ide: unknown IDE controller on PCI bus 00 device f9, vid=8086, did=24db

vfs: cannot open root device "" or 08:05. please append a correct " root=" boot option kernal panic :vfs:unable to mount root fs on 08:05.

I am installing this on a new Intel motherboard with an intel processor

Can anyone help?

sounds suspiciously like you are trying to install an older distro on newer gear which may not be supported.

so what Intel board etc are you trying to install this on.....

intel d865perl(e210882) motherboard and intel Pentium IV 3Ghz cpu w/ 800 Mhz FSB. We disabled Plug & Play OS support and enabled legacy support for IDE drives.

Just had a quick look at the Mobo you are using
here if you are interested

This looks like a fairly recent board ( early 2004 I think ) and you are trying to install an OS thats about four years old. So I would suspect that Mandrake 8 wont support your motherboard.

See if you can try Mandrake 10.0 or 10.1 or get your hands on a copy of Knoppix which runs live and if that boots then that could be the problem.
