No, no, not the lilo.conf file; I'm very familiar with that. It's the graphical background splash that it shows even though I have nothing to do with it in my /etc/lilo.conf file. Thanks anyway.

See lilo.conf(5)

I was just reading that man page, and there are options for specifying a bitmap file

bitmap=<bitmap-file>
Specifies use of a 640x480x16 bitmap file as the
background on which a boot menu is displayed. May
not be used if 'message=' is specified. Requires
that 'install=' specify a boot-loader which is
capable of displaying the bitmap; i.e., boot-bmp.b.

Hope this helps

Thanks, but my lilo.conf file does not even have bitmap= specified, but there still is a graphical splash when I boot into it!

Here's my lilo.conf:

Code:
boot=/dev/hda
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=15
message=/boot/message
lba32
default=windows

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.28
	label=linux
	append="root=LABEL=/"
	read-only
	initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.28.img

other=/dev/hda2
	table=/dev/hda
	label=windows

Lilo uses lilo.conf to build several things: the boot sector, the .map file, etc... that has all the information needed to display a boot menu and boot the desired OS. All these things are in a binary format, that would be desaster to edit. I suspect that the boot loader boot-menu.b is used on your system, and you are seeing it's default behavior.

I have been told that GRUB makes it much easier to display a splash/background image, and edit/change it. perhaps you should look there???

Some of this info may be slightly wrong, but well intended. In any case caution should be used when dealing with this area, as an error could render your system un-bootable. A rescue floppy or CD should be on hand, and you should know how to use it. In this manner, you should be able to recover from a mistake

Thanks jack4su, actually i'm not very experienced in boot loaders. I used to boot my linux machine from rescue floppy as the only way to boot into linux. I guess I'll stick with my current lilo config for now.
