Good but sorta easy guide to Kernel compiling/Re-Compiling?

OK,
so I'm trying to re-compile kernel for pmagic-hdd
and so I wanna learn all about kernel compiling and re-compiling.

Now, I'm a newb in this area, so I need guides that aren't for astronauts

thanks

OH, is every distro's kernel similar or no?
