GNOME won't start

The following message appears when gdm is executed during start-up:

"Authdir /var/lib/gdm does not exist"

The directory /var/lib/gdm already exists, but I tried manually re-creating the directory and changing owner the gdm:gdm, as well as setting permissions to 750. No dice.

I have no idea why this suddenly started to happen. I am using Java Desktop (SuSE).

Try changing your default runlevel to 3 (text mode)
edit /etc/inittab as root, find the line
Code:
id:5:initdefault:
and change the 5 to a 3.

Now restart the computer, and login. Type "startx" at the command prompt, and see if your window manager will start.
