Gnome - Nautillus question

When I boot up into Gnome I get the menu bar at the bottom of the screen but no icons on the screen. I have to wait about 3 minutes for nautillus to finish loading and display the icons. Everything works fine after that.

I am running RH8 on a P200 with 196meg RAM. I will add that I didn't have this problem the first time I installed RH8 on this machine but had to reinstall because I had to pull a drive from it.

Any ideas? :-)

Bill

Nautilus is a resource hog itself. I use Gnome and disable Nautilus even running on my 900mhz its kind of slow, so that is most likely the cause of it running on a P200.

Why don't you install RH on a real system ? Just kidding, humor is good sometimes.

Yeah I agree. I'm using Redhat 8.0 GNOME. It's very fast.

And how fast are the computers your using ? Gnome alone is gonna be slow on a P200 added with Nautilus and anything else loading for X..

It might not be a resource hog now in the latest release but you have to consider he's running on a fairly slower system too.

Thanks for all your comments... Even the funny ones :-)

I trIed turning off nautillus draw deskop and I still have to wait almost 3 minutes for the destop to finsih loading.

I have noticed that in the system logs I am getting quite a few hdc lost interrupts -- that is my CD. I am thinking maybe that is my problem.

I am also thinking that the suggestion for me to get a real pc is probably the best one <grin> I'll work on that. It looks like this old amptron board doesn't like linux.

Regards,
Bill
