Gnome Desktop

Hello Everyone:

I wanted to ask 2 questions:

1. I have recently installed ximian desktop on my RH 7.1 Dist.
when I reboot the computer I no longer have the GUI screen, only text based. What caused the change and how can I get it back so that I can choose whether I want KDE, GNOME, DEFAULT etc....

2. Netscape Navigator does not have the option to close/minimize in the right hand upper corner when working in GNOME (newest ver). I have to select FILE--> Close

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

1.) u can start your favourite GUI session by typing startx. but if u want the system to go into a GUI environment immediately, then edit one of the lines in the file /etc/inittab (i think u must be superuser to do this):

look for a line near the top that looks like this:

id:3:initdefault

and change it to:

id:5:initdefault

this will allow u to login at the graphical prompt after u next reboot

2.) i'm not so sure about this, but check the top left hand corner instead of the top right hand corner. there might be a button there u can click to close the application...

I have followed instructions and modified my /etc/inittab

the id is 5 and it still won't boot into GUI.....hmmm

is it possible that something became corrupt when I installed Ximian Evolution? I think it is only meant for GNOME?

My GNOME desktop is also GONE with no taskbar. gdm is already running and KDM takes me to the GUI login.

any takers. ha ha

thanks in advance

ok just to make sure the bases are covered:
did u save your inittab file after editing it? (ok i know it sounds silly but i just want to make sure...)

if it already is, then have a look in your .xinitrc file in your /home/someUser directory. if it exists, post up what's in it.

OR

if there is no such file in your home directory, create one. don't forget the dot (.) in front of the name of the file (ie. .xinitrc). then look up the Ximian website (can't help u here coz i don't use Ximian) on how to add Ximian to your .xinitrc file.

to run a gnome desktop, simply add the line:
gnome-session
to the .xinitrc file.

I did not have to make any chnges to the inittab. The id was already 5.

I noticed that I do not have a .xinitrc OR .xsession.

If I do create a .xinitrc , what would be the minimum to get KDE on startup..?

..is it exec startkde or kde-session ?

Thank you.

http://www.kde.org/documentation/faq....html#startkde

or if u don't feel like looking at the link, just type
startkde

in your .xinitrc or .xsession or .Xclients file
