what are some programs or tweaks you guys use speed up your system? like HDD and RAM defragging programs or resource tuts to reduce the amount of backround activity ... kind of like the service tuts at blackviper.com but for linux

Its not a direct answer to your question, but:

The single thing that had the most improvment on general performance that I did
was upgrade the kernel from 2.4.26 to 2.6.7 from the slack #2 CD.
That made a noticable difference.

Other then that, if you want to prevent background programs:
1- remove cron jobs that you don't want
2- prevent unnecessary services from starting up (pkgtool ->setup -> Services)

I'm sure others will have more/more detailed/better suggestions.
