Freeze after coming back(ctlr+alt+f7) form terminal

hi,

I installed 2.6.32 kernel in debian ,initially GUI didn't come up.
After executing following command
tasksel install gnome-desktop --new-install
GUI has come but the screen is split into two parts(3/4 and 1/4).
Is there anyway I can make the screen proper...?

one more issue:
after coming back from terminal(ctrl+alt+f7) system is freezing.

thanks in advance.

If I understand you correctly, you installed a new kernel (2.6.32) on an existing system, but the graphics did not work very well after that. If this is the case, some graphics drivers (such as ATI's fglrx proprietary driver) need to be reinstalled after changing kernel versions. However, if you are using graphics drivers that came packaged with your new kernel (which it may use by default), I would take a poke at your xorg.conf file (sometimes located in /etc/X11/). Maybe try out the vesa driver to see if it works with that then go from there? These things may or may not apply to Debian, so beware.

BUT before trying out any of the stuff I just said, I'd take a look at this post.

Hope this helps!

This is definitely an issue with your video driver. What graphics card do you have installed?

Also, Debian Squeeze uses the 2.6.32 kernel by default. What release of Debian did you install the 2.6.32 kernel on?

This is also an issue with your video driver. Depending on the driver, there may or may not be a fix.

I also have this issue with my nVidia proprietary driver. It usually takes about 10-15secs for the screen to re-draw. But this may be because I patch the source to enable FW and SBA. This does not happen if I use the Nouveau driver.

I am using Debian Squeeze , default kernel is 2.6.32-5-686.
Installed 2.6.32-686 kernel with some kernel features enabled.
Graphics card is : VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Sandy Bridge Integrated Graphics Controller
I installed 3.2.1 kernel and there is no problem with 3.2.1 kernel.
It looks like Resolution is the problem.
Current resolution in 2.6.32 is 1240x768 and in 3.2.1 kernel it is 1366 x 768.
in 2.6.32 It shows max supported resolutions is 1240x768 where as in 3.2.1 kernel it shows max as 8192 x 8192.
I tried adding 1366 x 768 resolution using following commands.
cvt 1366 768 60
xrandr --newmode "1368x768_60.00" 85.25 1368 1440 1576 1784 768 771 781 798 -hsync +vsync

but it is giving following error:
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default debian

I also tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg but it didn't work.
